St Paul's Church of England VC Junior School in Shepton Mallet has been rated 'Good' in its latest Ofsted inspection conducted on 3 and 4 October 2023. The school, known for its commitment to the 'REFLECT' values, has been commended for its efforts in creating a welcoming and caring environment, setting high expectations for pupil behaviour and learning.

The report notes that pupils enjoy coming to school, where they feel safe and well cared for. Their polite and courteous behaviour in lessons and around the school site is a testament to the positive atmosphere at St Paul's. Parents and carers have lauded the school for its supportive communication and the attention given to the pupils.

A significant aspect of St Paul's is its curriculum, designed to pique and sustain pupils' interest. The variety of experiences on offer, ranging from after-school activities to sporting events, contributes to the pupils' personal development. Roles such as school council representatives and eco-warriors have instilled a sense of pride and responsibility in the students.

The Ofsted report praises the school for its high academic standards and the effective implementation of its curriculum. Teachers' strong subject knowledge and clear instruction have been instrumental in enhancing pupils' learning experiences. However, the report also suggests that improvements could be made in the assessment methods used in some subjects to better identify and address gaps in pupils' knowledge.

Reading is a particular area of success for the school, with a well-considered programme encouraging pupils to become keen readers. The redesigned mathematics curriculum and a similar approach in other subjects like history and music ensure that pupils' learning builds progressively over time.

The school's commitment to inclusivity is evident in its support for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), ensuring they have access to the same curriculum as their peers. These efforts are complemented by well-targeted interventions that cater to individual needs, allowing pupils with SEND to thrive academically.

Governance at St Paul's is robust, with the school governors demonstrating a thorough understanding of the school and its community. They maintain a focus on curriculum development that prioritises pupils' interests. Staff appreciate the support from leaders for their ongoing professional development, and the school's safeguarding arrangements have been deemed effective.

This latest Ofsted report highlights St Paul's Church of England VC Junior School's dedication to providing a nurturing and high-quality educational environment. The school continues to be a significant presence in the Shepton Mallet community, contributing to the development of well-rounded individuals.
