Shepton Mallet's Community Rallies to Revive the Historic Amulet Theatre

In Shepton Mallet, a collective effort is underway to breathe new life into the Amulet Theatre, a cultural landmark with deep roots in the town's history. Originally opened in 1974 as 'The Centre', the Amulet Theatre was a gift from the Showering Family and has served as a hub for the arts and community events. However, since falling into private ownership in 2011, the theatre has seen limited public use.

Now, a passionate group of community members, including local councillors, residents, and arts group leaders, have united with the ambitious goal of restoring the Amulet Theatre to its former glory. This initiative aims not only to revive a key cultural venue but also to invigorate the town centre and high street.

A Call for Community Support

The revival project begins with a community consultation to gauge local interest and support. Organisers are keen to understand the community's desire to see the Amulet Theatre reopen and what potential uses they envision for it. Ideas already proposed include a ground floor dedicated to craft markets, art workshops, a museum, tourist information, and a café, while the first floor could host theatre, cinema, live music, and more. Have your say here.

Funding and Restoration Plans

The project has been deemed eligible for the Community Ownership Fund, a £150 million initiative by the Department of Levelling Up, aimed at empowering communities to invest in local assets. To secure funding, the project will need to demonstrate robust community backing and present a viable business plan. A formal community organisation will manage the process, ensuring all efforts benefit the community rather than individuals.

Local residents can invest in the project through share purchases, allowing them to have a direct stake and say in the theatre's future. Additional funds will be raised through public grants, private loans, and donations.

A Building with History and Character

The Amulet Theatre is not just a building but a piece of Shepton Mallet's cultural tapestry. Known for its Brutalist architectural style and unique theatre technology, including the UK's last remaining example of a motorised ceiling, the theatre has played a significant role in the area's arts scene. Its restoration involves not just physical repairs but the preservation of a vital piece of the town's heritage.

Join the Effort

For those interested in being part of this exciting journey to restore the Amulet Theatre, auditions in the form of collaborative workshops are planned for January 7, 2024.
