News in Shepton Mallet

An extra £22,000 a year to help support communities to run library buildings, and a commitment to retain nineteen Somerset County Council libraries was approved today.

For the remaining fifteen, communities are invited to submit expressions of interest by 15 November to set up Community Library Partnerships (CLPs). An additional £154,000 over seven years was approved today to help support CLPs and communities who step forward to run library buildings themselves.

One fire appliance from Shepton Mallet attended a car on fire which was well alight on arrival. Crews put the fire out using a compressed air foam jet. The cause of the fire was deemed as deliberate and Police were informed.
The vehicle sustained severe damage, and duty of care was left with the Police.

Gambling venues in Shepton Mallet will take part in Responsible Gambling Week, the biggest ever industry-wide campaign to promote responsible gambling.

Responsible Gambling Week runs from November 1-7 and involves every major operator in the UK and Ireland from all five industry sectors, casinos, bookmakers, arcades, bingo and online, and is supported by gambling charities. Staff at gambling venues will discuss with customers, how to keep gambling fun and safe.

Two fire appliances from Frome were initially mobilised to a property fire, reported to be coming from a rear bedroom. A third appliance was sent from Warminster. On arrival crews confirmed large volumes of smoke issuing and requested an aerial appliance. This was mobilised from Bath.

This fire involves a residential block of flats, 2 storeys high. Crews are at work with 4 main jets, 2 breathing apparatus, the aerial appliance and various ladders. Roads around the area are closed and will be for some time.

The Somerset Libraries redesign report published earlier this week recommends Somerset County Council continues to run a library building in Shepton Mallet, but its exact location is still to be decided.

Feedback from the library consultation, which ran earlier this year, shows local people would prefer to keep a library building as close to the town centre as possible. After considering this feedback and the issues with the current site, Somerset County Council acknowledges that a decision needs to be made on the future location of the library.
