Shepton resident, Emma Challis, aged 50, has notably completed her 200th marathon, an inspiring journey from Salisbury to Winchester, all in the name of Cats Protection, a charity she passionately supports.

Emma's accomplishment is rendered even more remarkable considering the health challenges she has faced. Her marathon journey began in 2013, a step towards recovery and strengthening after enduring severe physical trauma from a car accident in 1997 which damaged her spine, followed by a pelvis fracture in 2007 caused by a fall. Additionally, Emma has battled PTSD, an ordeal that intensified during the pandemic lockdowns.

The endurance athlete, who has also taken on ultra marathons and full-distance triathlons, covered over 1,500 miles last year alone. "I really enjoy my sports events and get such pleasure from doing them - I feel amazing before, during and after," Emma shares, underlining the joy and camaraderie she finds in these challenges.

In 2016, Emma's resilience was tested yet again when diagnosed with a chronic blood clotting disorder, after being hospitalised with multiple clots in her lungs just days following her 28th marathon. Determined not to be deterred, she now takes necessary precautions, including medication and support stockings, to manage her condition.

Emma's devotion extends beyond personal health triumphs; she combines her passion for running with her love for animals. Having worked as a vet nurse, she dedicates her marathons to not only fundraise but also to amplify awareness of Cats Protection. Emma actively participates in the rehabilitation and fostering of cats through the Glastonbury & Wells branch of the charity, currently caring for Kevin, her 102nd foster cat.

Overcoming her health adversities, Emma's story is one of incredible determination and spirit. "I never thought I could achieve any of this because of my health problems but I refuse to let life get me down," she states. Emma's philosophy is a testament to the power of resilience and the willingness to push boundaries.
