Local community groups and voluntary organisations in and around Shepton Mallet can now apply for grants of up to £2,000 to support environmental and community projects through the newly opened Mendip Hills Fund.

The fund, which is aimed at supporting local initiatives across the Mendip Hills National Landscape, opened for applications on October 1 and will close on December 2, with decisions on funding to be made in January 2025.

Jim Hardcastle, Mendip Hills National Landscape manager, said: "It's more important than ever to help nature across the Mendip Hills, but funds can also be awarded for projects that help people in the area as well."

Last year, the Mendip Hills Fund distributed £12,450 to nine different projects, supporting everything from scout groups to art initiatives, as well as providing opportunities for isolated people to get involved in conservation work.

Community projects that can apply include those aimed at supporting local wildlife, improving community facilities, or launching social enterprises such as local food initiatives.

The fund is supported by a network of local contributors, including campsites, outdoor activity centres, and event organisers who donate through 'visitor-giving' schemes.

To find out more or to see if your project fits the criteria, visit the Somerset Community Foundation website or call Jim Hardcastle on 01761 462338 or Kirsty Campbell on 01749 344949.
