Police warning over rural thefts in Shepton and surrounding villages

Police are urging residents in and around Shepton Mallet to secure their outbuildings, sheds and small plant equipment after a string of thefts across rural areas.
Tools, garden machinery and other valuables are being targeted by opportunistic thieves, often accessing unsecured sheds and outbuildings in isolated spots. Police say motion lighting, visible CCTV and secure storage are some of the best defences against would-be burglars.
The alert was first issued in January, but officers say the problem is still ongoing. Updates shared by the local Neighbourhood Policing Team confirm that recent reports include suspicious activity in Pilton, where no offences were committed thanks to the quick response of residents.
"Vehicles and equipment that are easy to access may not be there by morning," officers warned. "Please report any suspicious people or vehicles in your area. Farm Watch is also a helpful way of staying informed and reducing crime."
Patrols continue during the day and evening in rural areas around Shepton, with police asking residents to take note of vehicle descriptions and number plates where possible.
Anyone with information or concerns is urged to call 101 or report via the Avon and Somerset Police website. To join the Farm Watch scheme, contact the local Neighbourhood Policing Team.
