Trailblazing women of Shepton Mallet to be celebrated in new project
Shepton Mallet is set to shine a spotlight on its historic heroines with a new project aimed at uncovering the stories of influential women who shaped the town's past.
Despite Shepton's rich history, the town currently lacks Blue Plaques commemorating its famous figures – a gap the Town Council and local historians are now working to fill.
With support from a research grant awarded by Historic England, the initiative focuses on uncovering the lives of "thinking women" who fought for women's rights during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By bringing together research from a variety of sources, the project will highlight the contributions of women who have left a lasting legacy in Shepton Mallet's history.
The community-driven project, led by Make the Sunshine, has also enlisted the help of seven local schools. Pupils are taking part in workshops with actors, bringing history to life through storytelling and performance. The workshops will culminate in a special production celebrating the lives of these trailblazing women, making their stories accessible and inspiring for a new generation.
The project team is calling on residents to get involved in uncovering Shepton's hidden stories. Whether you're passionate about local history, interested in women's rights, or keen to learn how to trace your own family history, your input is welcomed.
