Shepton Mallet Prison closes for filming as speculation grows over production
Shepton Mallet Prison has temporarily closed its doors to the public this week as the historic site becomes the set for a new production.
The closure began today (Monday, 27 January) and will remain in place until Friday, 31 January, when tours and activities are set to resume.
In an announcement on social media, the prison teased its followers, hinting at the mystery surrounding the project. "We're sworn to secrecy, but can you believe our prison will be closed for nearly a week for filming?" the statement read.
The post encouraged guesses about what might be in production, adding: "Could it be a sequel, or an entirely new production? Let the speculation begin! #Production #Filminglocation #SheptonMalletPrison."
Shepton Mallet Prison has previously played host to major productions, including the ITV mini-drama Des, which told the story of serial killer Dennis Nilsen, and the beloved film Paddington 2. Its atmospheric corridors and historic architecture have made it a sought-after filming location in recent years.
The prison, one of Somerset's most iconic landmarks, regularly attracts visitors for guided tours, offering a glimpse into its history as one of the oldest working prisons in the UK before its closure in 2013.
While details of the current production remain under wraps, speculation is likely to continue among locals and fans of the venue. The prison has promised to resume normal activities at the end of the week. Keep an eye on updates to see if more details about the filming emerge.
