Revised plans have been put forward for new homes next door to a former Somerset mill.

The Nurseries site is sandwiched between the existing homes on the A371 Cumnock Road and the former BMI site in Castle Cary, where planning permission for 81 homes was granted on appeal in August 2024.

The Nurseries has had planning permission for 24 homes in place since 2008, with work being carried out to clear the site but none of the houses being built.

New owner Biophilic Ltd. has now put forward amended proposals for the same number of homes, including a change the access arrangements.

Under the original plans, the new homes would have been access from Cumnock Road, using the same access road as the BMI development.

The revised plans will see Olympic Drive extended westwards to form the main access, with pedestrian access being maintained onto Cumnock Road and Upper High Street.

The plans were put forward following discussions between Somerset Council and the developer in 2022, with both parties agreeing that the site "needs

progressing having been left empty for too long".

The principle of this new access was established in July 2024, under a separate planning application – with these latest plans also amending the design of the new properties.

A spokesman for Biophilic said: "The Nurseries development will improve the neighbourhood with enhanced landscaping, with high quality architecture, and

with a true sense of community.

"Our goal is for the site to inspire other developers to see what can be done with an open- minded approach to design and construction, leading to better housing for future generations."

The council is expected to make a decision on the revised proposals by the summer.

Decisions are also expected in the comingmonths of several other major housing developments in Castle Cary – including the Station Green development of 200 homes near the town's railway station, and on Persimmon Homes' plans for 162 homes and a primary school on the B3152 Station Road.
