A Shepton Mallet truck driver has won £1 million just days after retiring.

Andrew Williams, 66, scooped the tax-free prize in the Omaze Monthly Millionaire Draw after ending a 35-year career behind the wheel.

The father-of-three said he had been worried about retirement, rent and rising costs before the life-changing win.

Andrew said: "I'll be honest, I was worried about the size of my pension pot.

"With rent and the cost of everything going up, I thought I was going to have to scrimp and save and be very careful.

"So for this to happen now, it's just unbelievable. It has changed everything — any worries I had have completely evaporated."

Andrew spent decades driving heavy goods vehicles, covering more than 1,500 miles a week.

His first week of retirement quickly took an unexpected turn when he was told he had become a millionaire.

He has since marked the moment with a tattoo of the Omaze logo on his wrist.

He said: "I like to get tattoos that represent important moments in my life, and this fits the bill."

Andrew, who was born in Slough but has lived in the South West for more than 50 years, said the win would help him support his family.

He has two daughters and a son, aged between 27 and 36, and is a grandfather, with another grandchild due later this year.

He said he would like to help his son get on the property ladder, as well as support his daughters with their future plans.

Andrew added: "If I can make life a bit easier for them, that means everything to me."

Despite the win, he said he does not plan to live extravagantly.

He hopes to invest most of the money and use the interest as income.

There will be a few treats, though, including a new watch, a more comfortable car and a possible upgrade for a trip to the Rugby World Cup in Australia.

Andrew said the only thing he had previously won was a burger-shaped radio in a competition about 40 years ago.

He said: "In 66 years, nothing like this has ever happened to me.

"To be honest, I'd have been happy with a tenner, so a million is out of this world."

Matt Pohlson, CEO and founder of Omaze, said: "To go from worrying about your retirement to winning £1 million just days later is extraordinary.

"It's brilliant to see Andrew able to look after his family, enjoy his retirement and make plans he simply couldn't have considered a week ago.

"Everyone at Omaze is absolutely thrilled for him and his family."
