Wells and Mendip Hills MP Tessa Munt has called on the Government to reinstate the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme.

The Liberal Democrat MP says listed churches and chapels across the constituency are facing fresh uncertainty after changes to funding for repairs and maintenance.

The scheme allowed communities to claim back VAT on essential upkeep and repairs.

Ms Munt said many local churches had contacted her over the past 18 months to raise concerns about cuts to the fund.

She said: "Over the past 18 months, I have been contacted by many Listed churches and chapels across my 'patch', all of whom are deeply concerned about cuts to this fund.

"The Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme allowed communities to claim back VAT on essential upkeep and repairs.

"For many, it wasn't just a significant grant, it was essential to their continuation."

Ms Munt said she was concerned the replacement funding would not cover the basic maintenance needs of local buildings.

She pointed to historic sites such as St John's Church in Axbridge and Wells Cathedral, as well as smaller chapels and churches across the Mendip Hills.

The Liberal Democrats say the changes, combined with VAT costs, represent a significant drop in support for historic buildings, many of which also provide important community spaces in rural areas.

Ms Munt said: "Unique Listed churches and chapels can be seen across this region.

"They are part of our heritage and landscape and need our protection.

"My Lib Dem colleagues and I are proud to get things done in our communities, including fixing church roofs.

"I will continue to raise this with the Government."
