Plans for new cemetery near Shepton Mallet raise parking concerns
By Laura Linham 5th Nov 2026
Plans to create a new cemetery beside Mendip Crematorium near Shepton Mallet have drawn an objection over the risk to a private water supply and concerns about parking on Old Wells Road.
The proposal would extend the crematorium site to provide burial space, hardstanding, car parking and landscaping. Somerset Council has not yet decided the application.
One neighbouring resident has objected, saying the groundwater assessment submitted with the plans did not identify a private borehole which supplies drinking water to their home. They say the proposed cemetery site is within 250 metres of it.
The resident also raised concerns about the assessment of winter groundwater levels and said the transport information did not reflect existing parking pressures during busy services. The application's transport statement proposes 23 parking spaces.
The objection asks the council to seek further information on the borehole, groundwater conditions and expected traffic and parking before determining the application.
The council's planning file shows that revised flood-risk documents were submitted on 23 October. Somerset Highways and the Environment Agency have also submitted comments on the application.
The public consultation period closed on 4 November. The application, reference 2026/1694/FUL, remains under consideration.
