Shepton Mallet school parking patrols stepped up
By Laura Linham 10th Jul 2026
Parents and carers are being warned to keep clear of school entrance markings as police step up parking patrols during drop-off and collection times. Avon and Somerset Police said it had received complaints about vehicles encroaching on yellow "School Keep Clear" zig-zags.
The markings are intended to preserve a clear view of the road for children, pedestrians and drivers. Where restrictions are supported by signs, motorists must not stop, wait or park on the zig-zags during the hours displayed — including for a brief drop-off or collection.
Police are asking drivers to park a short distance from school entrances and walk the remaining way. Parents and carers should also avoid blocking driveways or access points and allow extra time during the busiest parts of the school day.
Extra patrols will visit schools at drop-off and pick-up times as part of the response. Officers will look for motorists breaking the restrictions while speaking to drivers about the risks caused by unsafe or inconsiderate parking.
The campaign was agreed and updated on Tuesday, 30 June 2026. Residents have also been encouraged to report dangerous parking to the police.
Officers said keeping school entrances clear gives road users better visibility and reduces hazards for children travelling to and from school. Drivers are being urged to check nearby signs carefully before stopping.
