Shepton Mallet Fire Station could be in line for a major upgrade after plans were submitted to modernise the long-serving Board Cross building. The station, which opened in August 1960, has remained in continuous operational use for more than six decades.

The application, submitted under planning reference 2026/1283/FUL, sets out a package of works aimed at bringing the fire station up to modern operational standards. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service says the refurbishment would improve the building's condition, layout, accessibility, energy efficiency and day-to-day performance.

The station occupies a prominent position at Board Cross, on the eastern side of Shepton Mallet, and forms part of the town's established emergency service infrastructure. Planning documents say the building would remain in use as a fire station, with the scheme described as investment in an existing public service asset.

The proposals include a new roof covering and solar panels on suitable roof space. The ageing curtain wall at the rear of the appliance bay would also be replaced, with the existing PVC upgraded to aluminium.

A new access door and window are also planned as part of the works. The documents say these changes would help separate officer accommodation from the wider operational station, supporting the service's work around dignity at work and contamination control.

Inside, the layout would be reworked to make the building more practical for modern crews. The plans include improved sanitary facilities, upgraded rest accommodation, dedicated enclosed toilets and kitchenettes for separated areas.

The muster bay would be enlarged and separated from surrounding circulation space. Mechanical and electrical systems would also be improved, with LED lighting installed throughout the station and better heating provision.

Planning papers say the fire station is typical of mid-20th century civic and service buildings, with a practical design shaped by its operational use. The proposed roof covering would be a bitumen waterproofing membrane system, similar in appearance to the current roof but with the addition of solar panels.

The design and access statement says the work is intended to extend the life of the existing station rather than replace it. It says the refurbishment would help the building continue to support emergency service provision in Shepton Mallet and the surrounding rural area.

The statement adds that the scheme would bring the station in line with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service's dignity at work and contaminants strategies. It also says the project would support sustainability improvements through the roof works, solar panels and upgraded building systems.

Somerset Council will consider the application before making a decision.
