Wells and Mendip Hills MP Tessa Munt has warned that rural communities must not be left behind as politicians pursue greater devolution. The date on which the Liberal Democrat statement was issued was not provided.

Ms Munt challenged Andy Burnham, described by the party as the "PM-in-waiting", to ensure that rural areas receive proper attention, particularly when decisions are made about public transport.

The Liberal Democrat MP said many people living outside major towns and cities already face services that are limited, poorly planned or unavailable. She argued that any transfer of power away from Westminster must address the different needs of rural communities.

"For many rural communities, public transport is sporadic, badly thought out or non-existent," Ms Munt said.

"While I broadly support greater devolution, I am deeply concerned that shifting an outpost of Downing Street to Manchester continues to keep Government focused on urban issues."

Ms Munt said reliable public transport was essential for connecting communities and supporting local economies. She called for rural services to receive greater priority under any future change in government.

"I hope that with a change in Prime Minister comes a change in mindset," she said. "Public transport is a key part of connecting rural communities and boosting the economy, it needs greater prioritisation, and I will do all I can to continue to bring it to the attention of the Government."
