Duchess of Edinburgh rocks Shepton Mallet with a visit to Field to Food Learning Day
The Bath and West Showground in Shepton Mallet was the stage for a royal visit from the Duchess of Edinburgh, who attended the 2024 Field to Food Learning Day earlier this week.
This annual event, now in its sixth year, aims to enlighten Key Stage 2 pupils about the origins of their food, from the field to their forks.
Over 1,400 children participated in a variety of hands-on activities designed to deepen their understanding of farming and food production.
Lilanie Self, from the Bath & West Showground, was thrilled about the Duchess's presence and the impact of the event.
"It's so lovely, it's just heartwarming. It's such an important message to get across and it's one of our favourite days in the calendar for the whole team," she said.
"Also alongside that, it does fit in with their curriculum which is really important to us. We make sure that it's a valuable day out for them. They're not missing out on classroom learning because what they're doing here will link back to what they're doing at school."
The day was a hit, with a variety of interactive experiences designed to engage the children in the true essence of agriculture, allowing them to look, hear, smell, and get their hands dirty
