What's On in Shepton Mallet offers diverse events this January, from dance theatre to writing retreats, ensuring engaging, budget-friendly activities for all.

What's On in Shepton Mallet is brought to you by the Bath & West Showground — home to the biggest events in Somerset — and La Bella Italian Restaurant.

Who says January has to be boring? Shepton Mallet's kicking off the new year with a packed week of creativity and community.

From the high-energy family dance theatre of Shed-Ache, to mellow singing sessions and peaceful writing retreats, there's something to lift even the most winter-weary spirits — with tickets that won't flatten your post-Christmas budget.

Start your weekend deep underground in Glastonbury on Friday— or at least in theory — at the Glastonbury Pagan Moot: Geoff Stray – Glastonbury Underground, kicking off at 7.30pm at the Beckets Inn. Expect talk of long-lost chapels, psychic mediums, thermal drones and tunnels beneath the Tor. Not your average Friday night.

Over in Street, it's a more grounded affair with the Avalon Wellness Community Meetup at Crispin Community Centre, 10am to midday. It's a £14 ticket, but you get a talk from Dorset's Becky Colwell on how to sell yourself at wellness events — no crystals required.

Writers of Shepton, this one's for you. The Writing Retreat with The Write Assistant promises a full day of guided exercises, free-flow scribbling and proper peace and quiet on Saturday. BYO pen. The location's tranquil, the vibes are gentle, and the biscuits are probably homemade.

On Sunday, it's wassailing time. The Middlewick in Glastonbury is inviting everyone — pots, pans and small children included — to take part in a centuries-old orchard-blessing ritual involving cider, toast, noise and tradition. The procession starts in the afternoon, and your £10 ticket includes warm cider, sausage rolls and a chance to shout at trees.

On Monday, Street's Carers Group is back at the Crispin Centre from 10:30am — a relaxed, friendly space for anyone offering unpaid care. There's also another listing for the same group here with a bit more detail, including upcoming guest speakers. If you're thinking of going, give Cath a ring first in case of changes.

In Shepton, vocal cords get a gentle workout at Singing for Wellbeing and Joy, a relaxed, ear-led singing session at the Paul Street Community Centre. No sheet music, no pressure — just folk, gospel and pop songs in good company.

And for Tuesday, it's live theatre, but not as you know it. Shed-Ache lands in Shepton Mallet's Create8 venue at 10:30am, promising a family-friendly mix of dance, comedy, balance, buckets and sunflowers. It's described as "seriously silly" — and for £3 a ticket, it's a weekday treat for home educators or just anyone up for a giggle.

Wells rounds out the week next Thursday with Fun Dancing for Wellbeing and Joy at Ston Easton Village Hall. Helena Eden's back with her joyful dance sessions to classic tunes — think easy-to-follow moves and a mix of high and low energy, depending on how your New Year's resolutions are holding up. Drop-in is £10, or get a five-class pass for £42.50.
