Students at Whitstone School in Shepton Mallet are celebrating their GCSE results after the school reported improved progress across a range of pupil groups and a string of standout individual performances.

Year 11 pupils received their results on Thursday, 20 August, with the Charlton Road school saying this year's outcomes reflected the work of students, staff and families. Whitstone said there had been improvements across different groups of pupils as well as strong performances at the highest grades.

Headteacher Matthew Pike said: "I am incredibly proud of every student who sat their exams this summer.

"These results demonstrate rising ambition and genuine progress across the school. Our values of Ambition, Respect and Excellence are lived out in classrooms every day, and the students celebrating their achievements today are wonderful examples of those values in action.

"We are delighted to celebrate both exceptional attainment at the highest grades and the meaningful progress made by students across the whole cohort."

Among the school's highest-performing pupils was Iris, who achieved eight grade 9s, one grade 8 and one grade 7, alongside a Level 2 Merit in a vocational qualification.

Harry G secured three grade 9s, six grade 8s and a grade 7, while Matthew N achieved three grade 9s, four grade 8s, two grade 7s and two grade 6s.

Florrie W collected three grade 8s, four grade 7s and a grade 6, alongside a Level 2 Distinction in a vocational qualification.

Tuathla M achieved a grade 9, three grade 8s, a grade 7, a grade 6 and three grade 5s, as well as a Level 2 Distinction.

There were strong results too for Tyler E, who achieved four grade 8s, a grade 7, four grade 6s and a grade 5.

Bailey B secured a grade 7 in maths, grades 7 and 6 in science, a grade 6 in geography, two grade 5s in English and a grade 5 in further maths.

Aloka achieved two grade 8s, two grade 7s and three grade 5s, alongside a Level 2 Pass in a vocational qualification.

Whitstone stressed that the headline results represented only a small part of the picture, with pupils across the cohort celebrating their own achievements and progress.

Mr Pike said: "Every student at Whitstone will have their own personal achievements and reasons to feel proud. Headline figures can never capture the many individual success stories that exist across all subjects and for every student."

This year's results come against a mixed national picture. Across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the overall GCSE pass rate has edged down for a fifth consecutive year, while the proportion of top grades has risen slightly. The gap between boys' and girls' pass rates has also narrowed to its smallest level since 2000.

For Whitstone, however, the focus on results day was firmly on the individual journeys behind the numbers.

Mr Pike said the achievements reflected not only attainment at the top end but the progress made by students who had exceeded their own targets.

The school congratulated the whole Year 11 cohort and wished pupils well as they move on to further education, training or employment.
