Shepton police plan more patrols over street drinking
By Laura Linham 21st Aug 2026
Police are planning more foot patrols in Shepton Mallet after saying an increase in street drinking has led to a rise in anti-social behaviour.
Officers say the issue is causing increasing concern among residents and other members of the public.
Avon and Somerset Police said: "There has been an increase in street drinking in the area, which has led to a rise in anti-social behaviour."
The neighbourhood policing team says officers and PCSOs will increase foot patrols whenever operationally possible. They will also continue engaging with people involved and take action where necessary.
Police are asking residents to report incidents so officers can build a clearer picture of what is happening and target their response accordingly. Non-emergency incidents can be reported online or through 101, while emergencies should continue to be reported using 999.
The issue has been placed among the town team's current policing priorities rather than being treated simply as a one-off complaint. That means residents may see a more visible police presence as officers try to tackle behaviour which is making parts of the town less comfortable for others to use.
Shepton's neighbourhood officers are also holding several public sessions over the coming days, giving residents a chance to raise concerns directly. Details of upcoming appearances are available through the Shepton Mallet Town neighbourhood policing page.
