Eight homes planned in farm building near Shepton

An agricultural building at Pilton could be turned into eight homes under plans submitted this month.
The application concerns land off Tanyard Lane, Pilton, near Shepton Mallet, and seeks prior approval to change the use of an agricultural building into eight dwellinghouses. It was received and validated on Monday, 10 August 2026, and no decision has yet been issued.
The proposal, reference 2026/1517/PAA, is being considered through the prior approval process rather than as a conventional full planning application. The application describes the scheme as a proposed change of use of the agricultural building to eight homes within Class C3.
Details currently published for the scheme identify the site through land coordinates at Tanyard Lane, with the postcode BA4 4EL. The application remains at the submitted stage while the council considers whether the conversion can proceed under the relevant permitted development rules.
Prior approval applications allow some changes of use to take place without a full planning application, provided specific conditions and limitations are met. The local planning authority still has to consider the matters set out under that process before the development can go ahead.
The scheme would provide a relatively sizeable cluster of homes from a single existing agricultural building if permission is secured. No decision has been made, however, and the application remains under consideration.
Pilton, a few miles from Shepton Mallet, is best known internationally as the village associated with Glastonbury Festival, but housing and development pressures remain rather more everyday concerns for people living there all year round.
