Skateboards, scooters and BMX bikes will be taking over West Shepton Skate Park when Shepton Mallet's Skate Jam returns next month.

The event will run from 10 am until 4 pm on Saturday, 5 September, bringing professional coaching, demonstrations and competitions to the skate park. Riders of all ages and abilities are being encouraged to take part, whether they are already comfortable on the ramps or have barely set foot on a board.

Professionals will be on hand throughout the day to help riders get to grips with skateboarding, scootering and BMX. The programme has been split so complete beginners and younger riders can have a go before the afternoon competitions get underway.

From 10 am to 11 am, there will be skateboard and scooter lessons specifically for complete beginners and very young participants. The pace then picks up from 11 am until midday, with skateboard and scooter lessons open to everyone alongside professional demonstrations.

After a short break, things turn competitive.

From 12.30 pm until 4 pm, riders will be able to enter scooter, skateboard and BMX competitions, with separate under-13 and over-13 categories. Prizes will be up for grabs across the competitions.

The return of Skate Jam forms part of Shepton Mallet's programme of community events and gives younger riders in particular the chance to learn from experienced professionals without needing to arrive with a catalogue of tricks already perfected.

For anyone whose current skateboarding technique consists mainly of standing on the board and hoping for the best, the morning beginner session may be the sensible place to start. Those with rather more confidence can save their energy for the ramps — and the competition — later in the day.
