Shepton Mallet Town Council sets council tax precept for 2025
Shepton Mallet Town Council has confirmed its council tax precept for the upcoming financial year, with an increase for Band D households to £6.07 per week, up by 20p compared to last year.
The precept forms 10% of the overall council tax bill and funds services and facilities specific to Shepton Mallet. These include maintaining local amenities, supporting community events, and providing grants to local organisations.
Financial priorities
The Town Council has highlighted its role in maintaining services that are no longer supported by Somerset Council, including CCTV coverage and the public toilets on Commercial Road. The council says it has allocated funds to ensure these services continue to operate for the benefit of residents.
The precept was set following a process of public consultation, committee discussions, and scrutiny.
Local services and initiatives
The funds raised by the precept are used for a range of projects, including:
- Maintaining Collett Park, the Cenotaph, and the Market Cross
- Supporting community groups through grants, with over £58,000 awarded this year
- Organising events such as Collett Park Day, Cinema in the Park, and Skate Jam, and contributing to events like the Carnival and the Mid Somerset Show
In addition, the council continues to support longer-term initiatives such as off-road walking and cycling routes, including the Strawberry Line and the new bridge at West Shepton.
The new precept aims to maintain existing services while continuing to invest in local infrastructure and community projects.
