Shepton Mallet seeks nominations for blue plaque heroes
By Laura Linham 17th Mar 2026
Shepton Mallet Town Council is calling on residents to nominate people who have helped shape the town for recognition through its plaque scheme. The council said it is still seeking nominations for "unsung heroes" from the past or present who have made a real difference in the community.
The project is part of a rolling programme designed to celebrate notable local people and spark wider interest in Shepton Mallet's history. The council said successful nominations could eventually lead to a physical plaque being installed in a public location.
Residents are being invited to put forward individuals they believe deserve recognition and explain why they are notable, including their contribution and impact on the town. Supporting evidence, such as historical references, records and other sources, will also be required as part of the process.
The next stage will include workshops for people who have submitted nominations, along with anyone interested in local history. Shepton Mallet Town Council said the sessions would help residents learn how to research remarkable local figures, including how to use the National Archives and other key sources.
The first workshop is due to take place at the Art Bank on Wednesday, 8 April 2026, at 7 pm. The council said completed research would later be presented to a panel as part of the blue plaque selection process.
A council page about the scheme says the project aims to inspire residents to learn more about the people who helped shape Shepton Mallet and their lasting legacy. It also says the campaign includes four AI-generated characters intended to encourage people to explore the town's shared heritage. More information about the Blue Plaque Project is available here.
People who want to nominate someone, or take part in the history workshops, can register their interest through the council's Blue Plaque Project form.
