Shepton Mallet prison sleepover returns for 2026 bookings
By Laura Linham 27th Jan 2026
Bookings are now open for 2026 dates of Night Behind Bars, the immersive overnight prison experience held at Shepton Mallet Prison.
The popular 12‑hour sleepover gives guests the chance to spend the night inside one of Britain's most historic jails, sleeping in original Victorian cells that remain largely unchanged since the prison's closure. The event runs from evening until morning, offering a unique blend of history and atmosphere far from ordinary.
Participants are welcomed by a prison officer and taken on a guided tour of the facility, revealing the site's dark past, notorious inmates and unsettling tales from its years in operation.
After the tour, guests are free to explore the prison at their own pace. Some enjoy ghost hunting in the abandoned wings and echoing cell blocks, while others join group activities or soak up the chilling atmosphere of the site.
Organisers say the experience is especially popular with paranormal enthusiasts and history lovers, and due to limited availability early booking is recommended.
