Shepton Mallet Prison opens cells for heritage season
By Laura Linham 24th Apr 2026
Shepton Mallet Prison is opening up its cells, yards and historic wings for a spring heritage season.
The attraction's History and Heritage programme runs from Monday, 20 April to Saturday, 27 June, offering visitors a closer look at the stories behind one of the town's best-known landmarks.
Set inside Shepton Mallet Prison, the experience takes people through original cell blocks, exercise yards and prison wings.
Organisers say the season will focus on the people who once lived and worked behind the walls, exploring stories shaped by crime, punishment, consequence and change.
Guided tours will offer extra detail, including lesser-known accounts from the prison's long past.
The site is promoted as the world's oldest prison and remains one of Shepton Mallet's most atmospheric heritage attractions.
Visitors can get 20% off guided tours when booking online with the code HERITAGE20.
The offer is valid online only and cannot be used with any other promotion or discount.
