A vital community meeting is set to take place at the Shepton Mallet Library on Wednesday, 31st January 2024, from 7pm to 9pm, focusing on the future of the Amulet Theatre.

A volunteer group comprising local councillors, residents, and arts group leaders spearheads efforts to purchase and rejuvenate the theatre, originally opened in 1974 as 'The Centre'.

This meeting, organised by a dedicated group of volunteers, including local councillors and arts leaders, is a key step in the efforts to purchase and revitalise this cultural landmark.

It's a chance to discuss potential uses for the building and gather support for the project. It also aims to recruit volunteers to assist in drafting a business plan and preparing a grant application.

Ideas for the theatre's future include transforming the ground floor into a space for craft markets, art workshops, a museum, tourist information, and a café. In contrast, the first floor could host theatre performances, cinema screenings, live music, and more. This meeting offers a platform for the community to share their views and suggestions.

The project has been deemed eligible for funding through the Community Ownership Fund, which requires strong community backing and a sound business plan. Local residents can further support the initiative by investing in shares, giving them a direct stake in the theatre's future. A formal community organisation will oversee the restoration to ensure the theatre benefits the entire community.

Residents are encouraged to attend the meeting to be a part of the discussion and the theatre's revival journey. For those unable to attend but wishing to contribute, they can contact Martin Berkeley at 07966 008778 or via email at [email protected].
