Shepton Mallet has welcomed two new town councillors following this week's by-election, with residents turning out to vote for new representatives in the East and West wards.

Lib Dem Aaron Hood has been elected to represent the West ward, while Future Shepton's Bob Thornton will serve the East. Both were confirmed following Thursday's vote and will now take their seats on Shepton Mallet Town Council.

Aaron Hood, who grew up in the town and attended St Paul's and Whitstone schools, said he is committed to strengthening Shepton's sense of community.

"I ran Parkrun every weekend and volunteered for junior parkrun from a young age, seeing just how great a community Shepton has," he said. "That's why I'm eager to explore options for a community space in Shepton. Having lost the Leisure Centre where I worked, I'm keen to see what can be done to revitalise community spaces in the town."

Hood also pledged to campaign against further bed closures at local community hospitals and promised to work hard, listen to residents' concerns, and take every opportunity to support the town.

Bob Thornton, newly elected for the East ward, has lived in Shepton Mallet since 1986. A former headteacher and active member of the local Rotary Club, he brings experience in leadership and community work.

"Being part of many community projects has shown me the power of teamwork," he said. "I love the positive impact of working together, whether that's giving young people a space to thrive, helping those in need, or strengthening community spirit across Shepton."

Thornton said he would focus on developing community facilities for all ages, improving access to leisure opportunities, and supporting the Future Shepton initiative to help revitalise the town.

Shepton Mallet Town Council thanked all candidates for putting themselves forward and everyone who took the time to vote. Councillors Hood and Thornton will be formally welcomed at the next full council meeting.
