Shepton Mallet's Community Fridge has been forced to close until further notice after volunteers were subjected to aggressive behaviour from a member of the public.

Police have launched an investigation following two separate incidents, which happened at the fridge based between Screwfix and Aldi within The Haskins Retail Centre.

The Community Fridge — a lifeline for many in the town — offers free surplus food to anyone who needs it.

A spokesperson for the team behind the project say they've had no choice but to shut its doors for now to protect their volunteers.

In a statement, organisers said they were working with police and hope to reopen as soon as they can — but no date has been set.

They added they were "incredibly grateful" for the community's support and understanding while they deal with the situation.
