Shepton Mallet parkrun turns 8 — and they want you to help break their record (there’s cake)

Shepton Mallet's parkrun regulars are on a mission — and it involves cake, conga lines, and breaking a record that's stood for eight years.
Saturday 26 April will mark both parkwalk day and the 8th birthday of Shepton Mallet parkrun, which takes place every week at Collett Park.
To mark the occasion, organisers want to break their attendance record of 344 people — set at their very first event back in 2017.
They are encouraging regular runners and walkers to bring a friend along and help hit a new target of 350 participants.
And in true birthday style — there will be cake at the finish line.
A spokesperson for Shepton Mallet parkrun said in a Facebook post: "If every current runner and walker brought someone with them we could get 350. Let's conga round Collett Park and introduce some new people to our Saturday addiction."
Unlike traditional races, parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5km event where everyone is welcome to walk, jog, run or volunteer — with no pressure to wear sports gear or aim for a fast time.
"There's no time limit — come and enjoy the fun," organisers added. "Normal clothes for a 5km walk are fine."
Shepton Mallet parkrun takes place every Saturday at 9am in Collett Park. It is entirely organised by volunteers and followed by a post-event coffee at The Hive in Shepton Mallet High Street.
