The Market Cross in Shepton Mallet has been fenced off for safety reasons.

The iconic structure has reportedly been damaged due to the weather, with there still being a risk pieces of stone could fall from it.

The market on Friday (January 24) is still expected to take place.

"Unfortunately there has been some damage to the Market Cross due to recent weather and parts of the pinnacles have dislodged," Shepton Mallet Town Council said on Facebook.

"There may be some risk to further pieces of stone falling so we have erected fencing around it in order to keep the public safe while we put things in place to to make repairs.

"We have informed Somerset Council as we are aware there is a Market tomorrow.

"We are expecting the market to continue and the stall holders are informed that they may need to adjust their pitch location slightly."
