Party in prison? Shepton Mallet stag and hen dos offer behind-bars experience with a twist

Shepton Mallet Prison is offering up its cells for something a bit different this wedding season – stag and hen parties behind bars.
The 400-year-old former jail, known as one of the most haunted in the world, is now hosting stag and hen experiences with a mix of escape rooms, guided tours and team challenges – all within the eerie surroundings of the decommissioned prison.
Groups are invited to don orange jumpsuits, get "processed" on arrival, and take part in a range of activities designed to bring adrenaline, chaos and plenty of laughs. From immersive escape games to themed challenges, there's a chance to test friendships and nerves before the big day.
One of the standout options is Turf Wars: A New Realm – a multi-room escape game that spans four themed zones inside the prison walls.
"Why settle for the usual night out when you can celebrate somewhere completely unique?" a spokesperson said.
"We offer a bit of everything – laughter, competition, creepy corridors – and even the first round of drinks on us."
The venue is available year-round, with indoor activities running whatever the weather. Whether you're looking for a serious challenge or just a laugh with friends, organisers say there's something to suit every group.
