Somerset Council warns of A361 closure between Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet from Sunday 28 July to Thursday 22 August for drainage work, urging drivers to expect delays.

Drivers are being warned of significant travel disruption later this month as a key section of the A361 between Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet is set to close for nearly four weeks.

Somerset Council has confirmed that drainage works will take place outside Millfield Preparatory School from Sunday 28 July to Thursday 22 August, with a full 24-hour road closure in force throughout the period. The closure forms part of the council's A361 Edgarley Road Drainage Scheme.

The timing has been scheduled to coincide with the school summer break due to the proximity of Millfield Prep. While engineers will aim to reopen the road at weekends where feasible, full weekend access is not guaranteed.

The road will, however, be accessible for the weekend of 9–10 August to allow for the Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza. Discussions are ongoing regarding access for the Mid Somerset Show on Sunday 17 August.

A diversion route will be in place via the A39 and A371 through Wells. Drivers are urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.

Separately, Wales & West Utilities will be carrying out gas main replacement work on the A361 at Fishers Hill from 11 August to 1 September, using multi-way traffic signals. Both projects will overlap between 11 and 22 August. The council has advised that the full road closure should help manage traffic flow in the area during this time.

The drainage works are registered under reference LG0171285021, and the gas works under Wales & West Utilities project code XY274003002101127.

Motorists are advised to check live travel updates and follow signed diversion routes throughout the affected period.
