Jobs in Shepton: Night shifts, HGVs and a job that involves hosting people at home
By Laura Linham 21st Aug 2026
Anyone having a quiet browse for a new job in Shepton Mallet has plenty to get through this week. And by "quiet browse", we naturally mean the sort that begins with curiosity and ends with your CV open at 10.47pm.
There's a strong showing from driving, engineering and support work, alongside a few management roles and one rather unusual vacancy for anyone happy to turn their own home into part of the working day.
Office, management and the people entrusted with the spreadsheets
Clarks in Street is recruiting a Digital Performance Marketing Manager, with permanent or fixed-term contracts considered and hybrid working on offer. The role reports into the footwear giant's UK and European ecommerce operation, so this is rather more involved than boosting a Facebook post and hoping for the best. See the Digital Performance Marketing Manager role.
Also at Clarks in Street is a Head of Commercial Finance, Rest of Europe role. It's a senior leadership position aimed at someone capable of combining finance with commercial strategy — which probably means knowing your margins without visibly wincing when someone says "forecast". See the Head of Commercial Finance role.
In Wells, an accountancy practice is looking for a Senior Accountant. The job includes final accounts, VAT returns, personal and corporation tax, management accounts and advising clients on performance. Previous practice experience is essential, with Xero or QuickBooks knowledge an advantage. One for those who can look at a spreadsheet without immediately needing tea. See the Senior Accountant role.
There's also a Contracts Manager vacancy covering the Somerset area, advertised through the Wells jobs board, paying around £50,000 plus vehicle and benefits. The role involves overseeing contracts and operational teams for a specialist infrastructure services business, so expect fewer quiet afternoons alphabetising folders and rather more keeping several moving parts moving. See the Contracts Manager role.
Care, support and jobs where being decent actually matters
In Shepton Mallet, Alongside — formerly Julian House — is recruiting a permanent Service Manager for its MOTS and SHAP services. The job pays £34,505 a year for 37.5 hours a week and involves managing teams supporting people experiencing homelessness and social exclusion. Some evenings, weekends and on-call work are part of the deal, and you'll need a driving licence and your own vehicle. See the Service Manager role.
There's a more unusual care-related option in Shepton Mallet and the surrounding area, where hosts are wanted to run day-care friendship groups from their own homes. Groups consist of four older people for up to two full days a week, depending on local need. It won't suit everyone — not least anyone whose spare room currently contains three clothes airers and a Christmas tree — but for the right person it's certainly different. See the Day Care Host role.
Optics, practices and keeping Street in focus
There are a few eye-catching vacancies in Street, in the most literal sense.
A Dispensing Optician Manager is wanted for Asda's optical operation, helping run the team and deliver clinical care to customers. Asda says its fixed-price approach means staff aren't expected to upsell lens options, which is refreshingly straightforward in a world where buying anything usually involves being offered six upgrades before you reach the till. See the Dispensing Optician Manager role.
There is also an Optometrist vacancy in Street advertising a package of up to £75,000, with salaries listed at up to £65,000 depending on experience plus a potential £5,000 bonus. The role offers 25-minute testing times, weekend flexibility and funding for further clinical progression. Full-time and part-time applicants are considered. See the Optometrist vacancy.
And mydentist is recruiting a permanent, full-time Practice Manager at its Hindhayes Lane surgery in Street, predominantly working Monday to Friday. The practice has four surgeries and offers both NHS and private treatment. Essentially, if you're good at keeping staff, patients, diaries and dentists pointing in roughly the same direction, this may be your territory. See the Practice Manager role.
Engines, lorries and jobs for people who know which end of a spanner is which
Shepton Mallet has several vacancies for those happier around machinery than management jargon.
A Multi Skilled Engineer is being sought by a Somerset food and drink manufacturer, with a salary of £55,000 and OTE above £60,000. The shift pattern is four on, four off, covering two days and two nights from 6am to 6pm or vice versa. It's not exactly nine-to-five, but neither is the payslip. See the Multi Skilled Engineer role.
There's also a permanent Workshop HGV Engineer vacancy offering day shifts, a basic salary of up to £46,500 plus overtime, and training on new products. Good news for anyone whose natural habitat is a workshop and who considers "something making a funny noise" a useful diagnostic starting point. See the Workshop HGV Engineer role.
Drivers have options too. A HGV Class 1 Driver role in Shepton Mallet offers immediate starts, with weekday day shifts at £16.50 an hour and nights at £17.50 an hour, with holiday pay handled separately. See the HGV Class 1 Driver role.
There is also a HGV Class 2 Driver vacancy in Shepton Mallet, paying £16.50 an hour for weekday day work, again with immediate starts advertised. See the HGV Class 2 Driver role.
And over in Castle Cary, a Van Driver – Multi Drop role pays £13.50 an hour for 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday, delivering to local businesses. No nights mentioned, no weekend rota advertised, just a van, a route and the eternal Somerset question of whether that tractor is actually going to pull in. See the Van Driver role.
Part-time, early starts and something a little different
There's also a bit of good-news hiring out of Glastonbury, where cleaning company Sleek Easy is expanding after picking up Medium Business of the Year at the 2026 Somerset Business Awards. The firm says enquiries and bookings have jumped since the win, to the point where the phones are apparently ringing daily, so now they're advertising for both a Cleaning Specialist and a Holiday Let Cleaner, with work helping the company meet growing demand across Somerset.
You can also read more about the expansion and award win in our full story on Sleek Easy here.
A family-run petrol station in Castle Cary needs a part-time Saturday Forecourt Shop Assistant. The Saturday is split into an 8am–1pm morning shift and a 1pm–5.45pm afternoon shift, with training provided. Handy for someone wanting a regular weekend job, provided they're comfortable dealing with the great British public before everyone has had sufficient caffeine. See the Forecourt Sales Assistant role.
Meanwhile, Wells has a Morning Delivery Driver vacancy with News Team Group, delivering newspapers and magazines to homes and businesses. It's self-employed and, as the title rather strongly hints, involves being awake at a time when much of Somerset is still negotiating with the snooze button. See the Morning Delivery Driver role.
And finally, a Senior Process Development Technologist is being sought in the wider Somerset/Shepton Mallet area, with pay of up to £44,000 plus benefits. The role sits within food product development, taking ideas from concept through to commercial production — essentially the point where "that tastes nice" has to become "we can reliably make 40,000 of them". See the Senior Process Development Technologist role.
Whether you're actively plotting an escape, cautiously testing the waters or simply browsing vacancies during your lunch break to remind yourself that other workplaces exist, there are plenty more roles being added locally.
