In the wake of the recent flooding incidents in Shepton Mallet caused by Storm Henk, Somerset Council is actively seeking information from residents to gain a clearer picture of the situation.
The council is urging those affected to report flooding incidents and share any images or videos to help assess the extent of the damage. Residents can report their experiences through this link and send visual documentation to [email protected] and [email protected].
On Thursday, January 4, Shepton Mallet was significantly impacted by flooding due to Storm Henk, prompting emergency responses, especially from fire crews.
One notable area of concern was Longbridge Road, where firefighters were called at 7:42 pm. They successfully used a mini ejector pump to remove water from a flooded property, reducing the water level inside.
Additionally, the Shepton Mallet fire crew responded to a call at 6:51 pm on Wells Road, where a car was stuck in floodwater, obstructing the highway. The crew managed to move the vehicle to a safer location and offered advice to the driver.
The flooding also caused substantial damage to local educational facilities, with Bowlish School enduring extensive flood damage that led to its closure on Friday. Moreover, Berrymans Close experienced severe flooding, with waters rising up to 3 feet deep, entering homes and causing significant distress to residents.
The council's request for detailed reports and visual evidence of the flooding is part of their ongoing effort to understand the full impact of such weather events and to enhance their response and support to affected communities. The information gathered will be crucial in shaping future flood prevention and response strategies in Shepton Mallet and the wider Somerset area.
