The fascinating history of the Poynting family, whose roots stretch across Clapton, Midsomer Norton, Chilcompton, Ston Easton, and Foxcote, will be explored in an upcoming talk at the Somer Centre in Midsomer Norton.

For over 200 years, the Poynting family produced an extraordinary range of individuals, from farm labourers to clergymen, pioneering farmers, and renowned scientists. Among them was John Henry Poynting, a notable physicist whose contributions to science were so significant that craters on both the moon and Mars now bear his name.

Clem Maidment, from Radstock Museum's Bygone Days Talks Team, will present an illustrated talk on Tuesday, 4 March at 7.30pm, sharing insights into the family's legacy. Doors open at 7pm.

Clem's interest in the Poynting family was sparked nearly 30 years ago when he met Julian Poynting, a descendant who visited Clapton to learn more about his ancestors. Through their long correspondence, Clem discovered the family's rich and varied history, including a clergyman who built a church and school, a Midwestern farming pioneer in the United States, and a daughter who married a cousin of a Prime Minister.

The talk promises to offer a unique glimpse into local history, revealing the far-reaching impact of a family with deep connections to the area.
