In the recent Toolstation Western League Premier Division match on Saturday, 17th February, Shepton Mallet FC ventured a short distance to face West Clews, aiming to extend their impressive form of just one loss in their last six outings.

The match was notable not only for the gameplay but also for the significant change in The Mallet's lineup, with Sam Jepson of Corsham Town FC stepping in as goalkeeper for the remainder of the season due to Tom Robert's unfortunate double leg break against Wellington.

The club and fans alike have extended their well-wishes to Tom for a rapid recovery and have shown support for Sam through collections and messages of encouragement.

Adverse weather conditions and a less-than-ideal playing surface added to the day's challenges, yet The Mallet commenced with relentless pressure on the home team.

This approach paid dividends when Cam Allen netted the opening goal at the 35-minute mark. The situation for Welton deteriorated as they had a player sent off five minutes before half-time, and their woes doubled shortly after with Joe Banks scoring for The Mallet.

Welton's difficulties were compounded in the second half with another player receiving a red card, leaving them with nine men on the field.

Despite being awarded a penalty, Shepton's Jacob Slogget saw his effort saved by Welton's goalkeeper, who performed exceptionally throughout the match, denying further attempts by Josh Jenkins and Braithwaite. The persistent effort from The Mallet finally saw success in the dying moments of the match when substitute Matt Morris scored, concluding the game at 3-0.

Credit is due to Welton's goalkeeper for his outstanding performance, keeping the scoreline from widening further.

The Mallet looks forward to their next match against Barnstaple Town FC, at 3.00pm on Saturday 24th when they play Barnstaple Town FC at Shepton Playing Fields BA4 5XN.

A contest is anticipated to be highly competitive, given the close league standings of both teams.
