Shepton Army Cadets open their doors to young people and volunteers
By Laura Linham 5th Oct 2026
Young people interested in outdoor adventures, learning new skills and making friends are being invited to meet Shepton Mallet's Army Cadets at an open evening this Wednesday.
The town's detachment will open its doors at Shepton Mallet Cadet Centre on 7 October, from 7.30pm to 9pm. Families and adults interested in volunteering are also welcome.
The evening will introduce visitors to the opportunities available through Army Cadets, from first aid and navigation to fieldcraft, sport and outdoor activities.
Cadets can work towards Duke of Edinburgh's Awards and recognised qualifications, while developing confidence, teamwork and leadership skills. No previous experience is needed, and joining does not involve a commitment to enlist in the Army.
The Shepton detachment hopes the event will reach people who may be unfamiliar with the organisation and encourage both young people and prospective adult volunteers to get involved.
It forms part of the first National Cadets Week, which runs from 5 to 11 October. The government-backed initiative is highlighting cadet activities across the country and recognising the volunteers who help run them.
Adults do not need a military background to volunteer, with training and support available to help them take on the role.
Anyone interested can visit Shepton Mallet Cadet Centre during Wednesday's open evening to find out more.
