Shepton Mallet had mixed fortunes in their recent matches, battling to a 1-1 draw away at Saltash United before suffering their first defeat of the season at home to Paulton Rovers.
In the away match against Saltash on Saturday, 10th August, Shepton worked hard for their point despite missing several key midfield players. Early on, Saltash put the Mallet under pressure, but keeper Tom Easterbrook made a crucial save from a deflected shot. Shepton's top scorer, Charlie Bateson, had a chance in the 20th minute, but his effort was cleared off the line by Elliot Crawford. Saltash took the lead in the 35th minute when Crawford, left unmarked, found the net from a free kick.
Shepton responded with a brilliant team goal in the second half, as Bateson controlled a clearance and set up Luco Ponsillo, who fed Jake Sloggett to chip the ball over the keeper. Solid defensive work, particularly from James Sharkey and Man of the Match Ethan Witchell, kept the game level as Shepton left with a deserved point.
Just days later, Shepton suffered their first defeat of the season in a 2-1 loss at home to neighbours Paulton Rovers on Tuesday, 13th August. Despite controlling the early stages, Shepton took the lead through a stunning 20-yard strike by Fin Haines.
Josh Jenkins nearly added a second, but his header was well saved by the Paulton keeper.
Paulton equalised in the 30th minute after a deflected free kick led to a tap-in for former Shepton player Elliott Creely. Five minutes later, Kitan Jaiyeoba broke through the Shepton defence to put Paulton ahead. Shepton pressed for an equaliser, forcing five corners in stoppage time, but couldn't find a way through. Joel Sisson was named Man of the Match, with Will Banks also impressing.
Next up, Shepton face a challenging FA Cup tie away to Wessex League leaders Baffins Milton Rovers on Saturday, 17th August. Supporters are welcome to join the coach leaving the ground at 10:15am for £20. The following week sees Shepton travel to Cornwall for an FA Vase clash with Callington on 24th August. The Mallet will also have a chance to avenge their loss to Paulton Rovers when the sides meet again on Tuesday, 27th August. Their next home game is scheduled for Saturday, 31st August, against Oldland Abbotonians.
