Shepton Mallet Town Council seeks design team to revamp Collett Park.

Shepton Mallet Town Council has begun the process of hiring a design team for a major upgrade of the Park Road entrance at Collett Park. The £800,000 project will replace the temporary café cabin and ageing toilet block, improve access for walkers and cyclists, and mark the start of the Strawberry Line.

The council, acting as trustee of the Collett Park Charity, says the buildings are reaching the end of their life and no longer meet modern standards. Footfall has risen sharply since the new play area opened in 2023 and will increase again as new homes are built nearby.

A two-stage competition will select the design team, with firms submitting expressions of interest by 9 January and interviews taking place in February. The winning team will then lead public engagement and prepare designs through 2026, with construction expected to begin in 2027.

What residents need to know

Why is this happening?

The café and toilets are outdated, hard to maintain and no longer accessible enough for the number of people using the park.

How much will it cost?

Between £600,000 and £800,000 excluding VAT.

Who is paying for it?

A mix of council reserves, charitable funding and a possible public works loan.

What will actually change?

A new café building with indoor and outdoor seating, modern accessible toilets, better lighting, improved landscaping and a clearer, safer entrance. Space for food trucks and small events is included, along with better cycling links to the Strawberry Line.

What happens to the current café?

It stays until early 2027. The operator will be able to bid for the new lease.

Will any trees be removed?

Two trees with ash dieback may need to be felled if surveys confirm it.

How will residents be involved?

Through public events, stakeholder sessions, school workshops and an online survey as the design develops.

When will work start?

Not before 2027. All design, engagement and planning work happens in 2026.

Who chooses the designer?

A panel of councillors, the project officer and a RIBA client adviser.

Where can I find more information?
