Wells Cathedral firewalk returns with places for 80 fundraisers

Fundraisers will walk barefoot over hot embers on Wells Cathedral Green when a charity firewalk returns next spring. Shepton-based SWEDA is recruiting up to 80 adults for the challenge on Friday, 9 April 2027, to help fund support for people affected by eating disorders and body image concerns.
The previous event attracted participants including the Mayor of Wells and the Dean of Wells Cathedral, the Very Revd Toby Wright. Teams from local businesses and community groups also took part.
SWEDA fundraising manager Gavin Osborn said: "We had such a great night last time, and the people of Wells really took this event to their hearts. Having a Firewalk right on the Cathedral Green as the sun went down created a fantastic spectacle. We had a big crowd gathered, cheering on our walkers as they faced their fears and braved the flames."
Participants will receive a full training and safety session from Firewalk UK before attempting the crossing. The evening will also feature a local samba band, a Rock Choir, refreshments and a raffle.
The charity says the embers can reach temperatures of up to 1,200°F, or around 649°C. Preparation includes mindfulness and breathing techniques to help participants manage their nerves.
SWEDA has supported people affected by eating disorders across the South West for more than 30 years. The charity works with people of all ages, with money raised helping to support its services.
Gavin added: "Our clients face their illness with courage every single day, so a Firewalk is a great way for us to not only raise funds but also awareness about the issues they experience."
Early bird tickets start at £20, and participants must be over 18. Places can be booked through the Firewalk for SWEDA Eventbrite page, with information about the charity's work available on the SWEDA website.
