Shepton Mallet Carnival road closures: what residents need to know
By Laura Linham 3rd Nov 2026
Shepton Mallet Carnival's expected road-closure plan includes restrictions from 9pm on Tuesday, 17 November, ahead of the procession the following evening. The organisers say the arrangements are still subject to final planning, but have published details of changes affecting residents, drivers and parking. sheptonmalletcarnival.org.uk
Residents in Field View and lower Cannards Grave Road are due to receive a pass for parking at the council offices if they do not have a private drive. Cannards Grave Road, Field View and Field House are expected to close from 9pm on Tuesday until midnight on Wednesday, 18 November.
People living in Tadley Acres are expected to access their homes via Whitstone Road, using Webber Road and Hobbs Road, from 9pm on Tuesday until 11pm on Wednesday. Little Brooks Lane will not be available for entry or exit during that period.
Whitstone Road is also due to close from 9pm on Tuesday until 6am on Wednesday, with access to properties operating one way from the Charlton traffic lights towards Flock Roundabout. It is then expected to close again from 7.30pm on carnival night until the procession has passed.
The expected town-centre closures will begin at 6.45pm on Wednesday and remain in place until the procession ends. Cannards Grave Road, Townsend, Old Market Road, Commercial Road, Paul Street and Charlton Road are listed for closure; organisers say some roads could shut from 6pm if needed for public safety. Organisers warn that cars will not be allowed onto the procession route while the carnival is under way. Residents who may need to leave before it finishes are advised to park somewhere where their exit does not lead onto the route.
After the procession, marshals will direct traffic towards the nearest main road. The A371 towards Wells is expected to remain closed until the carts reach Wells Relief Road, around midnight.
The carnival is scheduled to start at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 18 November. The full expected arrangements are on the Shepton Mallet Carnival road-closure page; the organisers' website says final planning is still pending. sheptonmalletcarnival.org.uk
