It's time to raise a pint to the local pub scene as the Campaign for Real Ale's (CAMRA) Good Beer Guide 2024 celebrates its 51st edition.

The guide, which takes a comprehensive look at over 4,500 of the UK's best pubs, has given special nods to two pubs near Shepton Mallet: the George Inn in Croscombe and the Manor House Inn in Ditcheat.

George Inn, Croscombe

Situated on Long Street, between Wells and Shepton Mallet, the George Inn is a 17th-century inn that has been refurbished by the owner. According to the guide, the pub is "serving at least four guest ales from West Country independents and hosting two beer festivals a year." It also notes that Blindmans King George and George and Dragon are beers exclusively brewed for the pub. Additionally, "four real ciders are available, with Hecks Kingston Black and Thatchers as regulars. There is a large main bar, snug with fireplace, a family room, separate dining room, and a skittle alley/meeting room to rear. Food is home-cooked using locally sourced ingredients in a modern theatre kitchen. The large garden has a covered terrace. B&B accommodation is in four en-suite rooms."

Manor House Inn, Ditcheat

Built with distinctive Ditcheat red brick, the Manor House Inn is a 17th-century establishment with a rich history. "Set in a village famous for horse racing, it has a good reputation for food, drink, and accommodation, with a warm welcome and a great atmosphere," says the Good Beer Guide. "It was originally owned by the Lord of the Manor, Edmund Dawe, and was called the White Heart, but by 1861 had become known as the Manor House Inn."

CAMRA Chairman Nik Antona said: "The last few years have been an incredibly difficult time for the industry, and we need more support than ever before to keep our nation's pubs and breweries open and thriving. I'd encourage everyone to use this year's Guide to visit the very best pubs and breweries across the UK and support them for generations to come."
