As Shepton Mallet prepares to host its much-anticipated 2024 Carnival, residents and motorists should be prepared for temporary road closures affecting key routes on 13 and 14 November. These closures are essential to ensure the safe staging and passage of carnival carts and to accommodate the crowds expected for the event.

Here are the main road closures and diversions in place:

  • Whitstone Road: This key route will close at 7:30pm on Wednesday, 13 November, to manage traffic and provide space for carnival activities. Residents of Tadley Acres will still be able to access their homes via Hobbs Road and Whitstone Rise, with stewards stationed to assist with entry. Southbound exits will remain open, directing traffic to Sheep Roundabout for onward routes towards Bristol, Bath, Frome, Yeovil, Glastonbury, and Wells.
  • Cannards Grave Road: This road will stay fully closed until 11:59pm on Wednesday, 13 November, as it serves as a staging area for parked carnival carts, which block access to other vehicles. Security staff will be on-site, and access permits have been issued to residents of Field View, Lower Cannards Grave Road, and surrounding care homes to allow them safe passage through restricted areas.
  • Little Brook Lane junction with Cannards Grave Road: The junction remains closed until late on Wednesday, 13 November, with clear diversion signs in place to direct Tadley Acres residents to use the Hobbs Road exit via Whitstone Road.

These closures are expected to impact traffic flow, and motorists are advised to plan alternative routes to avoid delays. Stewards and signage will be available to guide drivers and ensure residents can access their properties during the carnival celebrations.
