Shepton Mallet is facing an alarming increase in vehicle thefts, affecting the town and neighbouring areas such as Street, Glastonbury, Wells, and nearby villages.

In response to these incidents, police are urging residents to adopt enhanced security measures for their vehicles.

The police are advocating the use of various deterrents such as alarms, security lighting, and CCTV systems.

"We're seeing a rise in vehicle thefts across the region," a spokesperson for the police said. "We strongly advise residents to take proactive steps in securing their vehicles. This includes the use of alarms, effective security lighting, and CCTV where possible. These measures significantly reduce the risk of theft."

The police also emphasised the importance of community vigilance. "We encourage everyone to be alert and report any suspicious activities immediately using the 101 or 999 services, depending on the urgency," the spokesperson added.

While there hasn't been a specific trend in the types of vehicles targeted, the police advise all vehicle owners to remain cautious.

They recommend the following safety tips to keep cars safe:

  1. Park in Well-lit Areas: Choose parking spots that are well-lit and in view of CCTV cameras if available.
  2. Use Steering Locks: Even in modern cars, steering locks can be an effective deterrent.
  3. Install Car Alarms: Ensure your car alarm is functioning correctly; consider upgrading if necessary.
  4. Secure Number Plates: Use anti-theft screws for number plates to deter thieves.
  5. Hide Valuables: Never leave valuables in your car, especially in sight.
  6. Check Your Car: Regularly check that your car is locked and secured, even when parked at home.
  7. Vehicle Tracking Devices: Consider fitting a tracking device, especially for high-value vehicles.
