Masked balls and mince pies: Shepton Mallet’s doing Christmas its own way

Shepton Mallet hosts festive events including masked balls, concerts, and markets.

What's On in Shepton Mallet is brought to you by the Bath & West Showground — home to the biggest events in Somerset — and La Bella Italian Restaurant.

And if you've got an event that isn't listed here, don't panic – you can nub your event for free right here.

Shepton Mallet isn't just quietly festive this weekend - it's hosting masked balls, flea markets and bread workshops like it's the most eclectic advent calendar ever. Whether you're donning a Venetian mask or just trying to survive the gift-buying gauntlet, Shepton's got you covered in glitter and carbs.

Friday 5 December is bringing the big festive energy, with Wells doing its best impression of the West End. The Chorus of Disapproval's Christmas Concert takes over the Town Hall from 7.30pm with carols, guest band Twisted Vinyl and the promise of mince pies, which is obviously the main reason to go.

Over at the Bath & West Showground, it's night one of Bad Christmas, a gloriously grim festive dinner hosted by a drunken Santa and his emotionally questionable elves. If you're not into tinsel and trauma, maybe just potter around St Cuthbert's Church for the Crib Festival, which runs all weekend and boasts 200 nativity scenes. Yes, really.

Glastonbury is keeping it low-key Friday with St John's School Christmas Fair at the Town Hall. Great for ticking off the school raffle circuit, if nothing else.

Come Saturday 6 December, Wells throws everything at it. Christmas at Wells lands with 100+ market stalls covering the city centre from 9am, with added workshops and general decorative chaos over at Wells Museum.

Meanwhile, The Bishop's Palace kicks off grotto duties from 9.30am, but unless you booked ahead, you're out of luck.

Meanwhile, over in Glastonbury, Tree Planting Day at Bridie's Farm is where the eco-conscious crowd will be digging holes in return for soup. At the other end of the spectrum, The Lost Trades bring haunting harmonies and vintage folk vibes to the Avalon Acoustic Sessions.

If that all sounds too peaceful, The Geeky Gamer in Street is hosting a Warhammer 40k tournament with snacks, caffeine and tabletop bragging rights.

Not to be outdone, Shepton Mallet is getting dramatically festive with the Enchanted Venetian Soirée Ball at Congyre Hall. Think masks, prosecco and just the right amount of scandal. Meanwhile, Dorothy House is offering a more wholesome Saturday with festive stalls in Winsley.

By Sunday 7 December, the vibe has well and truly turned chaotic. Wells gets weird in the best way with Leopard Print Bingo at Sadlers Restaurant. Eyes down at 6pm for a £250 jackpot, a raffle, and free mince pies. Also on Sunday, The Rock and Roll Playhouse is running a chaotic, Beatles-themed kid fest somewhere in Somerset (exact location TBC).

Over in Shepton, the Giant Flea Market at the Showground is your place for dusty vinyl, old toys and questionable knick-knacks. Need a break? St Peter and St Paul's Church offers candlelit calm at their Christingle service.

Back in Street, Doc Rock will be rocking the Royal British Legion from 8pm. Free tickets available if you're quick.

On Monday 8 December, Shepton Mallet gets into carbs with a bread making workshop at Ammerdown. It's £50 to learn focaccia, sourdough and the joy of edible self-care. Tea and dip samples included.

And finally, Tuesday 9 December is for the thinkers. Arts Society Mid Somerset is hosting a talk about why Santa is the patron saint of pawnbrokers (no, really) at Caryford Hall. Coffee from 10.15am.

And if you're more of a poet than a punter, Shepton's Weekly Writers Group meets that evening too. It's £10 to join, biscuits provided, excuses not to write: limited.

Running something wild, weird, or wonderfully local? Whether it's a Druid drum circle or a bake sale in disguise, you can nub your event for free right here. Don't keep it to yourself - share the festive madness. And why not spread the word a little further? You can also Nub your event for free in Wells or in Shepton Mallet, too!
