Parents in Shepton Mallet are being urged to check their children's MMR vaccination records following a national spike in measles cases.
The UK Health Security Agency has declared a national incident, with a sharp rise in infections centred on the West Midlands. NHS Digital figures show Somerset's jab rate is below the 95% threshold needed to stop outbreaks.
Only 91.1% of local children were fully vaccinated by their fifth birthday in 2021–22, short of the World Health Organisation's target for herd immunity.
Somerton and Frome MP Sarah Dyke said: "Measles can cause very serious illness and even death. It's vitally important that parents of children who haven't had two doses of the MMR vaccine get in touch with their GP now."
Professor Dame Jenny Harries of the UKHSA warned there is now a "very real risk" the virus could spread to towns like Shepton Mallet unless uptake improves.
She said: "Children who get measles can be very poorly and some will suffer life-changing complications. Two doses of the MMR vaccine give lifelong protection and it's never too late to catch up."
Dr Doug Brown, chief executive of the British Society for Immunology, said the ongoing drop in childhood vaccination rates nationally was "extremely worrying" and called for urgent government action.
The NHS advises anyone with suspected measles symptoms — a rash, cold-like symptoms, or spots in the mouth — to contact their GP, especially if they've been in contact with a confirmed case.
