Shepton Mallet is serving up history, food and family fun this Sunday – and whether your dad's into steam engines, Italian food, or a swim in the sun, there's no shortage of local options for Father's Day, 16 June.

Here's everything you need to know to plan a great day out without even leaving town.

1. Free entry to Shepton Mallet Prison (yes, really)

One of the UK's most historic prisons is offering free entry for dads this Sunday. Shepton Mallet Prison is running a Father's Day offer where dads go free when accompanied by a paying child or adult. The self-guided tour runs 10am–5pm and covers 400 years of incarceration history. Use code Father25 when booking – only 50 free tickets are available, so don't hang about.

2. Book a table at La Bella

If your plans involve pasta, wine and woodfired pizza, LaBella Italian Restaurant on the High Street is a strong shout. Known for its relaxed atmosphere and generous portions, it's open Sunday until 10.30pm. Book ahead on 01749 681523 – tables go quickly on special occasions.

3. Take a dip at Shepton Lido

Father's Day often brings the sun out, so why not cool off with a family swim at Shepton Mallet Lido? With space for relaxed lengths or just splashing around, it's a low-key way to enjoy time together.

4. Hop aboard the East Somerset Railway

For dads who prefer locomotives to lattes, take a short drive to Cranmore Station and treat him to a steam train ride through the Somerset countryside. Check the East Somerset Railway website for tickets.

5. Explore Kilver Court Gardens

Whether you go before lunch or after, Kilver Court's landscaped gardens offer a peaceful walk and a great spot for photos. There's a café on site if you're still peckish.

6. Take in some history on foot

Shepton's not short of heritage. From the medieval Market Cross and the Shambles to the Church of St Peter and St Paul, there's plenty to see on a post-lunch wander.

7. Visit a local vineyard

If Dad's idea of a treat is a glass of something cold, Wraxall Vineyard is just a short drive away – ideal for a relaxing afternoon among the vines.

8. Round it off with cake and coffee

If you're not doing a full meal, several local cafés are expected to offer cream teas or Father's Day specials – a great excuse to sit down and catch up.
