Shepton Mallet Community Woodland narrowly avoided a serious fire after members of the public stepped in to put out a grass fire at Windsor Hill.

Friends of Windsor Hill Tunnels said the fire broke out on the main quarry floor on Wednesday, 30 July. Passers-by had to bring water to the area to stop the flames spreading.

The group said the fire had been caused after large logs that had formed part of a campfire were spread around the site. It warned that remote areas such as Windsor Hill can be impossible for the fire service to reach.

Friends of Windsor Hill Tunnels said the outcome could have been very different without the quick action of those who spotted the fire.

The group said: "Absolutely no fires please during this dry period. We were lucky this time. Had it not been for quick thinking passers-by it would have been very different."

The warning comes as dry weather continues to increase the risk of grass and woodland fires. Visitors are being urged not to light fires at the community woodland and to take extra care in remote areas.
