Shepton volunteers urged to help tackle speeding as police back Community Speedwatch

Shepton Mallet police are renewing their push against speeding through the town's residential streets, with a fresh call for volunteers to join Community Speedwatch.
The initiative, backed by Avon and Somerset Police, trains local residents to monitor traffic in areas governed by 20, 30 or 40mph limits.
Using speed detection equipment, volunteers record speeding vehicles, prompting warning letters and advice to be sent to the drivers.
Persistent or extreme offenders can face police enforcement, with data collected by Speedwatch teams helping to target hotspots.
The local Neighbourhood Team says speeding remains a key priority and is urging residents to get involved.
"The presence of Speedwatch volunteers shows drivers that their speeds are being monitored," a spokesperson said. "That data can lead directly to police enforcement at the worst locations."
The scheme has been active since April and was recently updated in early June. Anyone interested in joining or setting up a Community Speedwatch group in Shepton can email [email protected].
