Shepton Mallet Town Council has released a review of its 2020-2024 Town Plan, detailing a range of projects that have enhanced both the town's aesthetics and its community amenities amidst a period marked by unprecedented changes.

The council has initiated several key actions to improve community engagement and local infrastructure throughout this period.

The 2020-2024 Town Plan review showcases significant improvements across Shepton Mallet, reflecting the Town Council's efforts to enhance community life. Here are nine key areas where the town has seen notable progress:

Community and cultural events

Shepton Mallet has embraced a dynamic calendar of events, including outdoor cinema screenings, art workshops, circus shows, and various sports activities. These events are mostly free or funded, ensuring accessibility for all residents.

Enhanced local amenities

The addition of a £200,000 playground in Collett Park caters to a broad age range, featuring equipment suitable for children from 0 to 12 years and beyond. Additionally, recreational facilities like a table tennis and foosball table have been installed, broadening the park's appeal.

Digital connectivity

The launch of 'www.helloshepton.com' has provided residents with a comprehensive online resource for local events, community groups, and town news, enhancing community engagement and information sharing.

Environmental stewardship

Green Flag status for Collett Park has been maintained, highlighting the town's commitment to high environmental standards. Initiatives such as bee-friendly planting and the installation of a water refill station further underscore the town's dedication to sustainability.

Infrastructure improvements

Significant investments in the town's infrastructure, including the resurfacing of Market Place and Town Street, have revitalized the town centre, making it more welcoming and accessible.

Public signage and wayfinding

New wayfinding signs have been installed across the town to improve navigation for visitors and residents alike. This initiative has not only won a national award for its design but has also made the town more visitor-friendly.

Support for local businesses and groups

An average of £50,000 has been distributed annually to support local community groups and events such as the Lantern Parade, the Snowdrop Festival, and the Midsomerset Show, boosting local culture and community spirit.

Library services enhancement

The council has committed £15,000 annually to increase the library's opening hours and ensure its continued presence in the Market Place, enhancing educational and cultural access for all age groups.

Combatting urban issues

Practical measures like the installation of pigeon spikes in the town centre address specific urban maintenance issues, helping to keep public spaces clean and welcoming.

Future Plans

As Shepton Mallet continues to evolve, the Town Council has laid out an ambitious set of objectives in their 2024-2029 Plan to further enhance the quality of life for its residents. Here's a detailed look at how the council plans to build on recent successes and introduce new initiatives to keep the momentum going.

Enhancing Recreation Facilities

The council is set to further improve Collett Park by adding modern toilets, a new café with both indoor and outdoor seating, and continuing efforts to win prestigious awards like the South West In Bloom 'Pride in Parks'. There are also plans to establish a 'Friends of Collett Park' group to foster community involvement in developing the park.

Promoting Sports and Leisure

Efforts will be made to enhance access to both indoor and outdoor sports facilities. This includes supporting the campaign for a new leisure centre in Shepton Mallet and taking ownership of West Shepton playing fields to upgrade the facilities, ensuring diverse recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.

Supporting Outdoor and Non-Sport Activities

The council will continue to support the Shepton Walks group and its walking festival, maintaining the town's status as a 'Walkers Are Welcome' town. There will also be efforts to raise awareness about the network of multi-use paths, enhancing accessibility and encouraging outdoor pursuits.

Fostering a Vibrant Town Centre

Plans are underway to make the town centre more inviting with new bunting and banners, a yearly audit of street furniture for repairs, and the restoration of the Victorian Water Fountain to provide drinking water again in the Market Place. The festive lights display and Christmas Lights Switch on event are also set to become even more attractive to both residents and visitors.

Encouraging Sustainable Living

Investments will continue in green transport infrastructure, including enhancing the Multi-User Pathway network. The council will also adopt a green land management policy, support a Flood Action Group, and co-produce activities for the Big Green Week and the Great British Spring Clean to promote sustainable choices among residents.

Revitalising the Arts Scene

The council plans to support the local arts community vigorously by maintaining funding partnerships and organising events like Circus in the Park, a walking festival, and more. There is also a campaign underway to reopen the Amulet as a community and performance space, which will further enrich the town's cultural offerings.

Strengthening Community Engagement

The Town Council will improve its communication through regular updates on its website and by training officers to better support public enquiries. A Community Grants scheme will continue to provide financial support to local groups, and there will be increased efforts to create opportunities for volunteering and civic engagement.

Building a Healthy and Welcoming Environment

The council is committed to creating a built environment that supports health and wellbeing. This includes campaigning for safe crossings and influencing new housing developments to ensure they meet the community's needs and enhance residents' quality of life.

Advancing Green Initiatives

Shepton Mallet will facilitate and promote green lifestyle choices among its residents, installing recycling bins throughout the town and lobbying for conservation-friendly approaches to development, especially in listed buildings.
